Green Lantern Q&A

By Toshi
Being a hater is usually frowned upon in hip-hop, but anyone feeling some sort of way toward DJ Green Lantern a.k.a. The Evil Genius could be excused. The Rochester, New York, native has toured and DJ’ed for legends Jay-Z and Eminem, produced hits like D-Block’s “Mighty D-Block (2 Guns Up)” and Ludacris’ “Number One Spot,” and dropped classic mixtapes including Jadakiss’ The Champ Is Here. And during this era of marginal rap record sales, The Evil Genius has aligned himself with one of the most powerful brands in the video game industry with his contributions to Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV, which sold six million copies worldwide in its first week. He produced and put together Liberty City Invasion (Music From and Inspired By Grand Theft Auto IV), a soundtrack featuring Busta Rhymes, Clipse, Jim Jones, Fabolous and others. Rhapsody was able to get Green Lantern on the phone to talk about working on Grand Theft Auto IV, whether he’s still signed to Def Jam, and The N*****r Tape, his upcoming mixtape with Nas.
The Million DJ March

Green Lantern is heading up The Million DJ March to shed light on the underappreciated contributions that DJs make to the music industry:
“DJs are the middlemen in the success of the industry. They are the filters that help the economy of many markets. DJs are the least compensated in the industry element. No matter how many write ups DJs obtain, no matter how many tours they grace, they seem to stay on the same level. It seems that the DJs are a culture of sorts that is segregated by parts of the industry. I am calling on the industry to show support of an event to unify DJs and create future economic safety for these people. The Million DJ March will be the conclusion to a long road of requests from many markets to aid in our mission of security.” The event will also introduce a new DJ union, developed to protect those who chose this art form as a career. This movement will help set the industry standards for all DJs, while protecting the incomes of those already established, and providing goals for upcoming DJ’s. While this is not the sole point of the march, it is an example of many points the Conference of the March will focus on.

I respect Green’s grind. He really came up and continues to make moves. From a DJ in upstate NY, to producing and signing his own artists like Uncle Murda. The article talks about his reconcilliation with G-Unit, the present state of the mixtape game and on Uncle Murda getting shot:
C: When did you find out he got shot?
Green Lantern: He called me from the hospital bed [laughs].
C: How’d that conversation go?
Green Lantern: [Laughs] the conversation went like-I had just got off the radio, and he called me from the hospital bed, and he’s like “Yo, they trying to murder me,” and I was like “Who is this?” It was some unknown number. He said “It’s Murda, man!” He was like “Yo, son, I’m in the hospital. I’m shot in the head.” I was like “get the fuck out of here, you trippin.” And he was like “Yo, on my mother man, and my mother’s dead, I don’t play that.” I heard the nurse behind him like “Do you want any pain medicine?” He was like “Nah, nah, I’m good. I’m good.” I was like “how do you not want any damn pain medicine, man?” He was like, “Nah, it’s [the bullet] just lodged under my skin and it’s going to fall out.” I was like “damn man, at least take a Tylenol or something, dog.” I see a little bit of the comments that it’s a fucking publicity stunt, but come on man. Who the hell would take a bullet in the head?
